Communications Activities
Communications
The impression that you make on people depends on how you communicate with people. Communication is not just what you say, it is how you say it. It may not seem important, but the ability to express yourself can determine what opportunities may be made available to you and how well you are able to take advantage of those opportunities.
What you say
Have you ever thought how you talk to other people, and how the way that you talk depends on who you are talking to? Try this activity. Pretend that you want to describe your best friend to the following people. Imagine what you would say and how you would say it. How would you give the description to:
- another friend
- an adult in an authority position
- a complete stranger that you are asking help from
- someone you are trying to impress
Did your descriptions vary? What type of language did you use? Read some of the following web sites about language and see if the new information applies to your descriptions.
Profanity is a profane or strong way to express feelings. The problem is that the vocabulary is actually limiting. The same words can be used to express surprise, hate, disgust, affection or humor. Try the following activity to develop your vocabulary of expression
How you Say It
Your body language can convey as much meaning as the words that you speak. Think about how you stand, the gestures that you make and the appearance of the other person in the previous exercise. Read the following sites to learn more about body language and gestures
Go back and look at the description exercise and try it with different body language. See what a difference language and body language makes!
