Listed below is an overview of each component
-
Air Pollution In
this component, students are given a critical thinking situation which
asks them to explore the idea of an ozone action day and how it affects
a boy's actions. They are asked to locate information regarding an
ozone action day. There is an accompanying study guide to help students
through the research. After they solve this situation, there are
activities that they can complete on-line to reinforce what they have discovered.
Examples of these activities include a scavenger hunt and a word search.
-
Water Pollution "Water,
Water. . .Everywhere?" is an interactive unit which incorporates the use
of on-line and traditional media to assist the student in their study and
understanding of Water Conservation and Water Pollution. Students will
cover four areas: Natural Resources, The Water Cycle, Water Conservation, and Water Pollution. After successful completion of the lessons, students will work on a collaborative project in which they will use what they have learned to discuss and design a solution for a local water pollution problem, The Zebra Mussel.
-
Endangered Species This
component to the Eco-rangers module has a trifold purpose. First,
it introduces the student to the concept of endangered species and shows
them that there are endangered species throughout the United States.
Next, this component focuses on one of Illinois' endangered species, the
Greater Prairie Chicken and it's plight. Finally, this component
gives students an understanding of what they can do as citizens of the
United States to preserve the remaining members of Endangered Species groups.
-
Waste Management This activity
asks students to research the different types of waste that their school
generates. They play a game that introduces them to various forms of waste
and how that waste is managed. Finally, students are required to produce
a program that will reduce a specific waste from the waste stream at school
and prepare an oral presentation persuading the audience to incorporate
the program at the school.
