Travel Activity

Teacher's Instructions

This activity meets the following module objectives:

  1. Use internet search utilities to find information and to document the sources of recovered information.
  2. Evaluate the validity of the content within a Web site.
  3. Gather information which permits the student to compare and contrast similar products.
  4. Work collaboratively in a group of three of four towards the development of a finished product.
  5. Communicate (e-mail, telephone, or face to face) to obtain information.
  6. Deliver a coherent oral presentation to a larger group explaining the decisions made and the process used to arrive at consensus.
  7. Use appropriate active or passive listening skills with peer, teachers, and individuals outside the school setting.

This activity also serves aspects of the following Illinois state educational goals:
4 (Language Arts), 6 (Mathematics), 15 (Social Science)

Materials and Equipment:

  1.  The principle material required to complete this module activity is a computer with access to the Internet. Since the components of the activity require considerable on-line time for each team, one computer with an Internet connection should be considered a minimum requirement. One computer per student would be beneficial.
  2. The data to be collected lends itself to analysis by electronic spreadsheet. If the teacher and students are adequately prepared, this is a good exercise to reinforce those skills while achieving module objectives. Otherwise, tables made with paper, pencil and ruler will suffice.

Time Requirements

This activity will take approximately one week.  Students will need time to research and plan their trip.  Students will need to plan the route of the trip, determining where to stop each night, including the town and the lodging facilities.  Students will need to determine the miles traveled each day, calculating gas mileage, and budgeting money for gas.  Students must also keep a log as to what they will see and experience on their trip.
