Student Activity

Nutrition on the Road

In this activity you will be collecting and recording a large amount of data.  Read the instructions in advance and prepare an appropriate data table, either with pencil and paper or with an electronic spreadsheet.  Make sure you record your data carefully and that you recheck .  Leave space for calulated results if working with pencil and paper.  Submit your data page together with the data analysis and the answers to the questions to your teacher.

  1. Eat!  Be sure to thank your teacher and anyone else responsible for this bounty.
  2. Keep a log.  Record the company name and menu item of everything you eat.  If you don't eat a whole item record the fraction.  Record the amount of any extra item such as mayo or catsup.
  3. You know yourself better than anyone else knows you.  Estimate what fraction of your total daily diet is reflected by this single meal.
  4. Go to the Cyberdiet Calculator page.  Determine for each team member the ideal amounts of each of the following nutrients during each day:   carbohydrates,  total fat, protein, vitamins A, D and C, calcium and iron.
  5. Go to the fast food Web-Sites and determine how much of each  listed nutrient you consumed in this lunch.
  6. Divide the amounts in the previous step by the fraction determined earlier.  (This result is how much you would expect in one day).
  7. If 3500 calories above your recommended amount allowance represents one pound of fat gained, how will you do while eating this way for a week?
  8. Go back to the fast food sites and plan enough meals to eat for a day and still stay below the fat and calorie guidelines while getting enough of the other nutrients.
  9. Go back to the  Cyberdiet Calculator  page.  This time search deeper into the site and learn what you can about the eight nutrients that we are studying.  When you think that you are ready, take the quiz to check your knowledge.
