READING STRATEGIES

Sure, you know how to read.  But do you know different WAYS to read?  Reading is more than just decoding the words.  You aren't really reading unless you are getting some MEANING from what you read.

Not every reading assignment for school should be read in the same way.  For example, you should read a chapter in your history book differently than you read a short story in your English class.  Taking a different approach to each of these assignments will help you get some MEANING from them.  THIS is reading.

Try these strategies with your next reading assignment:

Content-area reading
Reading fiction

Your vocabulary and reading skills work together.  Here are some great sites to make your a better reader by expanding your vocabulary:

Big Word of the Day
A.Word.A.Day Wordsmith
The Cool Word of the Day Page
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day
Jeremy's Crazy Zany Random Words
