Aim: My goal is to improve the research
skills of my students by teaching them to use resources including books,
magazines, newspapers and the Internet more efficiently and to provide
a step by step guide to organizing information into
a presentation.
Rationale: Students need a guide for
learning how to approach research and follow through to a logical conclusion
in the form of a presentation or product.
Goals:
1) Students will demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and
operation of technology systems.
2) Students will are proficient in the use of technology.
3) Students will understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues
related to technology.
4) Student will s practice responsible use of technology systems, information,
and software.

support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity
6) Students will use technology tools to enhance learning, increase
productivity, and promote creativity.
7) Students will understand and analyze events, trends, individuals,
and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and
other nations.
8) Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information
from a variety of sources.
9) Students will use technology tools to process data and report results.
10) Students will evaluate and select new information resources and
technological innovations based on the appropriateness to
specific tasks.
11) Students will use technology resources for solving problems and
making informed decisions.
12) Students will employ technology in the development of strategies
for solving problems in the real world.
13) Students will understand, analyze, and compare social systems with
an emphasis on the United States.

as an understanding of the effects of geography on society with an emphasis
on the United States.

Audience and prerequisites: Students and
teachers of 7th-8th graders will use this curriculum to guide them through
a research project. It can be used
in conjunction with a project assigned by the teacher or as an independent
activity used to practice these skills. Students and teachers must have
basic computer skills and a
willingness to try new strategies and investigate new sources of information.
Subject-matter: Students will take a journey
back to the mid 1800's and assume the identity of a person from that
era. They must keep a daily journal of their travels.
Instructional plan: This module is
designed for students to use either individually or in small groups
with the teacher/ librarian acting as a facilitator.
Materials: Computers that are connected
to the Internet will be required for this module. Access to periodicals,
newspaper database and recommended books.
Assessment and evaluation:
Name_____________________________
Date______________________________
Project Description: 4=Great 3=Good 2=Okay 1=Fair 0=Poor(no itinerary
submitted)
4...This journal is well organized, highly detailed and descriptive.
The presentation is dramatically
appealing and enhances the reader's (or listener's) comprehension of the
imaginary travel back in time. The use of at least four web sites is clearly
evident. It includes an excellent representation
of that time period. The project over all has a polished appearance. The
presentation and journal showed clear knowledge of their unit.
3...This journal is organized and descriptive. The is appealing and loosely
keeps the
reader's (listener's) comprehension of their journey. The use of at least
two web sites is
evident. It includes a few representations of that time period, however
some crucial information of that time period is missing. The project has
a slightly tarnished appearance. The presentation
showed some knowledge of their unit.
2... This journal shows some evidence of organization. But dates are
missing/out of order. There are clear problems with the organization insufficient
description. There is little evidence of the use
of web sites. The project was poorly organized.Very few representations
of that time period. Missing too much information of that time period
is missing.
The project has an unfinished appearance. The presentation showed little
knowledge of their unit.
1...This journal is poorly organized and not up to date. There is no
evidence of the use of web based research tools. The journey back in time
was not clearly stated. The presentation was poor with little effort put
forth.
0...The student did not submit a journal.
