Aim: 

The aim of this library shelf on certain aspects of Ancient Egyptian Life is to support entries and prior work done by Chicago Public School teachers in connection with the Oriental Institute.  The entries we have listed are meant to be used with a guide book Life In Ancient Egypt.  The book is a guide for teachers based on the collection and resources of the Oriental Institute Museum at the University of Chicago. The book was made possible through grants provided by the Polk Bros. Foundation and the Lloyd A. Fry Foundation. The target audience in the Chicago School system would be sixth grade students.

This shelf is to be used as an extension of Life In Ancient Egypt.  Students who want to delve further into any particular aspect of the book may do so easily with the web pages listed.

Although this shelf follows the units developed for the Life in Ancient Egypt curriculum guide, the topics that are covered are broad enough to supplement any study of ancient Egypt.  Sixth grade, or any middle level grade, students who are engaged in a study of ancient Egypt and have access to the Internet will be able to easily navigate through the links.  A few of the links require Java to be enabled, but most of the sites can be used without this plugin.  This shelf not only includes web sites, but also includes a few old fashioned books.  The Oriental Institute Guide would also be quite helpful.

Illinois State Goal 5: Use the language arts for inquiry and research to acquire, organize, analyze, evaluate, and communicate information.
CAS A. Gather, organize, and integrate information from a variety of print and non-print sources (e.g., library, electronic sources, human resources) to answer questions and solve problems related to investigation and research.

Illinois State Goal 16: Understand and analyze events, trends, individuals and movements shaping the history of Illinois, the United States and other nations.
CAS A. Compare and contrast significant events in the historical development of various state, national, and world communities.
    CFS 3. Analyze major scientific, economic, religious, and political influences on the development of civilizations 2000 BCE to 450 CE.
    CFS 4. Summarize the basic characteristics of great empires and civilizations  from 2000 BCE to 450 CE (e.g., Greek, Roman, Chou, Persian, Mayan, Gupta,  Tang, Mali) to illustrate their similarities and differences.

CAS B. Describe the role and contributions of significant historical  figures and groups in the development of the United States and the world.
    CFS 3. Identify individuals from the history of ancient civilizations whose contributions have had a significant impact on their society.

CAS D. Summarize the influence of technology and mass communication on the historical development of the United States and the world (e.g., the wheel, the printing press, transportation, computer).
    CFS 1. Analyze and explain how social and cultural changes in various civilizations were influenced by technological developments (e.g., Roman roads and the expansion of the Empire, irrigation and the invention of the shaduf in ancient Egypt).

This shelf has been designed to compliment the study of ancient Egypt in the middle grades (specifically sixth grade), focusing on the following specific topics: geography, daily life, farming, writing, religion, burial customs, women, famous pharaohs, warfare, art and artisans, animals and pets, and math.

All of the materials on this shelf are web based. A book list, which can be accessed from the web, is also provided.
