Writing Narrative Stories
Step One - Prewriting

Aim:  Thestudents will choose a topic or beginning line for a narrative story andsubsequently fill in a graphic organizer using resources from the Internet.

Rationale: The students are required to demonstrate their writing ability on the ISAT. It is also expected that the students learn how to use the Internet asa resource tool. This lesson will provide the opportunity for them to workthrough the stages of the writing process to produce a document using resourcesfrom the Internet that meet the Illinois State Goals and the Chicago PublicSchools Academic Standards .

Goals and objectives:This lesson supports the following Illinois State Goals and Chicago AcademicStandards:

        State Goal1: Read with understanding and fluency.
        ChicagoAcademic Standards: (B) Use a wide variety of word analysis
        strategiesto read and comprehend unfamiliar words and material.

        State Goal3: Write to communicate for a variety of purposes.
        ChicagoAcademic Standards:  (A) Produce documents and other
        writtenworks that adhere to Standard English conventions;
        (b) Writewith focus, coherence, and clarity; and (C) Use stages of the
        writingprocess to develop short narrative, descriptive, expository,
        and persuasivetexts that communicate in terms of audience, purpose,
        and context.

Audience and pre-requisites:This lesson is for third grade students who are reading at level or nomore than a year below level, possess  fundamental spelling skills,grammar skills, punctuation skills, have participated in shared writingactivities, written very short stories in second grade and participatedin the publication of those short stories. The students have been instructedin the use of the mouse, how to use a link, how to use the scroll bar,how to go back to a previous window and how to print a page from the computer.

Subject matter:Language Arts: writing

Instructional plan:The students will access Internet sites that show the steps of the writingprocess, print out graphic organizers that help with prewriting activities,and list topics or beginning lines of stories that are of interest to thirdgrade students.

Materials: Computer,printer, Internet access, paper, pencil

Assessment and evaluation:The students will demonstrate success in accessing various web sites bylisting their topic/beginning line, printing  a copy of a graphicorganizer and filling in the organizer using the chosen topic or beginningline.
