Tips: TEACHER GUIDE:
Aim:  For use with Collection for Young Scholars (CYS). First and second grade students extend their language arts work through the use of visual arts.  They are exposed to the internet and other computer basics through using the site.
Rationale:  Although art pages are provided in the CYS text, many teachers do not use them with their students.  The information and activities in these pages have been designed to assist in exposing students to the arts as an extension to Language arts and Social studies.  Students will be attracted to the site because they are already familiar with the images and the unit topics.  In addition young students will have practice with the internet and basic computer skills.
Audience and Pre-requisites:  Schools that use the Collection For Young Scholars text books will be able to provide extensions for each unit through the use of this site.
Subject Matter:  Students will work in small groups exploring the elements of visual arts.  They will create their own artistic pieces (away from the computer) using activity descriptions posted on the site.  Students will also read about famous artists on the site.
Objectives: Students will view art pieces that are thematically related to language arts units previously covered as a whole group.  Students will use the site to extend their familiarity with visual arts elements.  They will be guided through art activities that emphasize the elements they are to focus on in each unit.  The illinois Standards addressed in this web site are all of the Fine arts standards (Goals 25 Language of Arts, 26 Creating and performing, and 27 Arts and Civilization.  In addition several Language Arts, Social Studies and Technology standards are addressed.  (Language Arts; Goals 1, 2, 4, and 5, Social Science; Goals 16 and 17, and Science Goal 13).
Instructional Plan: There are five units (Games, Folk Tales, Keep trying, Being Afraid, and Homes) Materials: Collection For Young Scholars Text Books, Arts and crafts materials, an area in the classroom for project construction.
Assessment and Evaluation:  Student's art work will be evaluated based on the classroom teacher's rubric for fine arts.  Participation will be assessed through observation of student work at the computer.  Students will be encouraged to give feedback and suggestions about the curriculum web via email on the cover page.
