You are going to create a map using grains and other materials to become familiar with the resources and farm products of the state you are studying. To do so, you will need the following materials:
- poster board or tag board
- thick markers or paint
- glue
- a map that shows the resources and farm products from your state
- various types of grains, dried food, and other materials (no perishable food)
Examples:
corn kernels- popped corn
- Cheerios
- Cream of Wheat
- sawdust
- stickers
- small toys
Use the following directions to help you create your map. Remember you can always do more or vary the ideas to fit your creative style. Mark each direction once it is completed.
- _____ Draw the outline of your state on your poster board.
- _____ Trace the major rivers in blue and label them. Trace the border in black.
- _____ Locate and label the major cities in your state.
- _____ Collect the materials to represent the resources and farm products.
- _____ Glue the materials on your map based on where the resources and farm products are found.
- _____ Lay the map flat to dry overnight.
- _____ Add you name, a compass rose, a title, and a map key.
- _____ When the map is complete, shake off the excess materials and bring it to school.
