  • Introduction

Ancient Egypt and the colorful pharaohs and queens have fascinated young people as well as adults for eons. Little is written about the queens of the pharaohs and even less about the Egyptian queens who became pharaoh themselves. Some queens were only pharaoh for a short time such as Cleopatra who has been over publicized, but another queen Hatshepsut was pharaoh for about 20 years. She is well recognized by the Egyptian people and celebrated for all of the accomplishments during her reign.

    Aim

To help educators introduce the internet into their social studies program. It is also hoped that educators will be able to help students gain expertise in searching for information on the web with the use of audibles, videos, panoramas, and search engines. Educators should be able to help students enjoy interactive games, puzzles and other fun activities while they search.

    Instructional Plan

Map work on continents, Africa, and the country of Egypt, in particular, are suggested. Discussion of the BC time period, the Nile River and the Valley of the Kings on the West bank are also suggested. Reading material with pictures of monuments, temples, pyramids, and tombs are helpful. Teachers can direct students to research one queen at a time and evaluate the students' progress or students can do self directed work on the queen site at their own pace exploring and assessing their own progress. Teams may pick one queen to search and report to the class in discussion panels.

Assignment pages and quizzes from this website can be printed out for teacher evaluation whenever desired. Time: Queen searches-80 min., quizzes-15-30 each, assignment pages - 40 min. (These are all approximations.)

Some teacher assistance will be needed with the Nova On-line activities to help students use the navigation buttons on Quick Time players to zoom, spin panoramas around, and move images in various directions. Some sites also will have video or audio players with on/off buttons and volume buttons to control and may need assistance to use the audibles.

All searches can be modified for individuals or groups. Shorter summaries describing Queens have been included on each queen's webpage for younger children and slower readers. The Goddesses page includes are picture chart with short descriptions of the goddesses to also accommodate younger and slower readers.

Teachers can also modify the activities for exceptional students by pairing them with more advanced students, or splitting activity questions between two students taking even or odd number questions, then evaluating each others answers before presenting them to the teacher.

    Assessment and Evaluation

Students can complete quizzes that are scored on line and give them to teachers for further evaluation. Scoring such as 70% or more as passing or rubrics can be used for assignment pages such as 3 good, 2 satisfactory, 1 fair, 0 incomplete or very little.

On-line quizzes and assignment lessons are available for the activity pages as well as self assessments, coloring sheets, crossword puzzles, interactive puzzles, and matching activities. Linked sites such as Nova and Odyssey have full lesson plans and assessments on Teacher Pages. Most are downloadable. Activities range from 15 minutes to 80 minutes and can be completed in one session for some or broken into several 20 to 40 minute sessions.
