Aim: The aim of this lesson is to recognize the letters of the alphabet and to match the letters to pictures that begin with each letter.
Rationale: Alphabet recognition is a task which requires much practice. To avoid the "rote" approach we must use different techniques and a variety of materials to achieve this objective.
Audience and Pre-Requisites: The children using this Web Site will be nonreaders who have basically no computer experience. Therefore, the Web Site needs to be extremely easy to use and self explanatory.
Subject Matter: The subject matter is Language Arts, specifically learning the alphabet.
Goals and Objectives: 1. Children will recognize the letters of the alphabet 2.Children will begin to associate the sounds the letters make with the letters themselves. 3. Children will get practice in using the mouse and following nonverbal directions. 4. Children will have fun using this Web Site.
Instructional Plan: This lesson will be used in the second half of the year after the children have had some practice in using the mouse through games installed on our computer. I would introduce the "link" as a means of getting from letter to picture and back again. I would work with two or three children at a time. Children can do the activity independently or work cooperatively with two children on each computer.
Materials: In addition to the computer these materials and activities will be used in teaching the alphabet: 1. Clay-children will make letters in clay. 2. Puzzles-children will put together alphabet puzzles. 3. Music-children will learn the song "Alphabet Rock" Greg and Steve Vol.2, and the "Alphabet March" from Hap Palmer's "Learning Activities Through Music." 4. Painting-children will use sponge letters to make the alphabet and simple words. 5. A "mystery box" children will put letters in the box, pull them out and try to guess the letter name. 6. Children will cut and paste pictures from magazines which begin with each letter of the alphabet and bind them together to make a book. 7. Games-children will play "Alphabet Lotto", the "Alphabet Memory Game", and the "Go Fish Alphabet Game" 7 Books-Alphabet Animals, Eating the Alphabet, ABC Pop, The Cowboy ABC, and Flora McDonnell's ABC.
Assessment: 1.
Teacher observation. 2. The teacher will use "flash cards" to check if
the children know the alphabet with 100% accuracy.
