Northern Illinois

Northern Illinois includes Rockford, the second biggest city in Illinois, and Dixon, Ronald Reagan's hometown. It also includes Freeport, where Mr. Polhill is from!

The weather here is significantly cooler than the southern part of the state. Near Lake Michigan, the temperatures are less extreme — the lake has a moderating effect.

Near the lake, the land is still marshy in spots, like Chicago used to be. However, as suburbs have continued to develop, the land has been paved over like Chicago.

The suburbs of Chicago keep spreading further and further west. However, there are still plenty of small towns with lots of charm.

Starved Rock, a beautiful state park, is in Northern Illinois. There you can see spectacular cliffs, bald eagles, and bears. Other wildlife in Northern Illinois include wolves, owls, foxes, and even bison.
