Introduction
This unit will use our web site to introduce students to art education
through the visual arts.

Aim
The aim of this module is to introduce the students to the Impressionists
Period of French Painting.

Rationale
Visual arts is one of the fine arts to which students should be exposed.
Art Education gives students the opportunity to express
and interpret ideas. The arts extend beyond reading, writing
and speaking. It provides an opportunity to reflect on history and
culture which can expand international and intercultural awareness.
Using technology with visual arts lets the user access
information, process ideas and express their opinions.
Visual arts and technology can be integrated into core subject areas.
This
unit will create an awareness of the presence of visual arts in their
own homes and communities.

Goals and Objectives
The students will:

become familiar with visual arts and artists

become visually aware of detail in the natural and constructed environment

explore the contributions of visual artists

recognize the connections between art and daily life

learn to respect the creativeness of themselves and others

become aware of the rich arts community where they live

express their opinions orally and in writing

Audience
This module is is appropriate for students in grades 5 - 9. It can
be modified for other grade levels.

Pre-reguisites
This is a beginning unit on fine art. Therefore, no prior knowledge
of fine arts is required. Teachers should familiarize students with
the terms link, hand symbol, the use of the back button, and bookmarking
the URL.

Subject-Matter
The unit covers the Impressionist period of French painting during the
late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Instructional Plan
Teacher's Instructional Plan
-
Guide students through the viewing experience of two Impressionist posters.
This is the time to remind students that we all look at the same art through
different eyes.
-
Explain and demonstrate the use and terms of link, hand symbol, back button,
and bookmarking the URL.
-
Present the vocabulary list of descriptive words.
-
Have students view the Renoir painting on the home page and have them list
at least ten descriptive words that come to mind.
-
Have students view the Van Gogh painting on the home page and have them
list at least ten descriptive words that come to mind.
-
Give students a quiz requiring them to contrast and compare these two paintings
on the home page.
-
Send students to the WWW to research two additional Impressionist artists.
Have them complete an assignment on the one of their choice.
-
Have students recreate Seurat's Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La
Grand Jatteaccording to his or her own personal style; using coloring
book version of the painting.

Display, view, and discuss the students' works of art.
Students' Instructional Plan

Observe, tell, and record their first, spontaneous reaction to the Impressionist
posters.

Demonstrate basic computer skills as directed by the teacher.
-
Find the list of descriptive words to use to express personal opinions
relating to the works of art.

Choose and list at least ten descriptive words for each of the two Impressionist
paintings on the home page.

We will utilize:

three to five posters of impressionist paintings

a list of descriptive vocabulary words

one coloring book version of impressionist painting
-
art supplies-colored pencils and crayons, markers, watercolors, tempera
paints, etc.

Assessment and Evaluation
The module will be successful if the students can:

understand that art works are created for a variety of reasons

make decisions about his or own methods and materials

articulate his or her own reasons for creating a particular work of art

see that "accidents" in his or her work can sometimes provide an exciting
new direction for the work

articulate his or her own response to a particular work of art
-
see that a single art work might evoke a variety of responses within the
class
-
contribute to a discussion about Impressionist artists
-
demonstrate the ability to surf the web for additional Impressionists art
