Introduction
What are some advantages for growing your own vegetables and herbs in your
backyard?
Aim
To expose students to alternative ways of health and nutrition by
growing their own vegetables and herbs.
Rationale
Students in urban areas are not aware of the health and benefits of growing
their own vegetables and herbs.
Goals and Objectives
Students will plant vegetables and herbs and learn their health benefits..
Audience
This WebLesson is designed for students in the 6th grade and higher.
Prerequisites
Students must have a willingness to learn new things. Students must be
able to work independently and in groups. Students must be able to use
a computer.
Subject-Matter
Biology: Students will learn identification of seeds, plants, stems, roots,
and flowers.
Instructional Plan
Students will be engaged in planting vegetables and herbs. Students will
plant seeds in a peat pot with soil, and water the peat pots. Students
will place peat pots in this teacher's new invention i.e. "MasterGardener's
Jump Start Seed KIT". Student will observe that by placing the peat pots
in the "Seed Kit" germination of seeds will be 10x's quicker than normal
germination. After germination, students will transplant plants to their
backyard gardens. The teacher will asist students in planting seeds watering
the soil and supplying the "SeedKit".
Materials
Students will use peat pots,seeds, soil, water, rakes, hoes, shovels, and
the "MasterGarden's Jump Start Seed Kit".
Assessment and Evaluation
When plants mature students will purchase similar plants from their local
stores.They will compare color, smell, taste, texture, and price. Students
will make two collages: one for the finished pizza and one comparing their
vegetables and herbs.When comparing vegetables and herbs students will
rank them by numbers 1 to 5, 5 being the best and 1 being the least.
