Nothing But the Facts

Chicago has a broad and diverse population of nearly three million people. This diversity contributes to Chicago's advantage in offering so many ethnic communities and vibrant neighborhoods. It also encourages the city's continuous celebration of culture, arts and entertainment for residents and visitors alike. Town of Chicago was incorporated August 12, 1833 with a population of 350 people. The City of Chicago was incorporated March 4, 1837, with a population of 4,170.

 

The Municipal Flag of Chicago consists of 3 white stripes separated by two stripes of blue with four red six-pointed stars.
On June 17,1966 by resolution adopted in a City Council meeting, the chrysanthemum was designated the official flower of the City of Chicago in response to the request of the Committee on Beautification of Chicago.

Chicago does not have an official song but according to the Chicago Public Library Music Information Center, these three songs are the most frequently requested for Chicago.

Chicago Nicknames

Probably the two most common nick-names have been "Second City" and "Windy City." The "Second City" name comes from Chicago's historical position as America's second largest city.
