
Aim:
The aim of this lesson is to enhance the student's knowledge
of African American literature.
Rationale:
There is a limited amount of knowledge about African
American literature among middle grade students. Therefore, a lesson plan
in which African-Amercian literature is included would greatly benefit
our students.
Goals and Objectives:
Students will be able to identify African American
literature
Students will be able to recall major events in
the story
Students will be able to use and discuss vocabulary.
Students will be able to summarize the story.
Students will be able to discuss the role that
each character plays in the story.
Students will be able to identify the story elements
of the story.
Students will be able to complete web made worksheets
with 80% accuracy.
Audience:
The lesson on this novel is designed for 5th and 6th
graders.
Perquisite:
Teacher should the novel prior to introducing the novel
to the students.
Students should be introduced to the vocabulary before
being introduced to the novel.
Subject Matter:
The subject matter for this novel is Reading/Literature.
Instructional Plan:
Students will be introduced to the novel.
Students will review vocabulary.
Students will discuss prior knowledge about the author.
Students will discuss the title of the book and the book
cover.
Students will read chapter one aloud and discuss the
discussion questions from the web site lesson.
Students will discuss the setting and the characters.
Students will summarize chapter one.
Students will complete writing journal number one from
the web site lesson.
Students will the major event in chapter one.
Students will begin reading chapter two.
Materials:
Students will need a copy of the novel.
Students will need a computer with Internet access and
about 25 minutes to read and access the web site.
Students will need paper and pen.
Students will a journal book.
Assessment and Evaluation:
Students will complete a final exam on the novel "Roll
of Thunder Hear My Cry" students should pass with 80% or above.
