CURRICULUM

Every child in Second Grade will read the following books:

                                    1.  Garden Gates
                                    2.  Going Places

A workbook will accompany each book.  A reading Check-Up Test and Reading Skills Test will be given after each unit.  Additional materials will be given throughout the school year.

The second graders are required to read twenty-five (25) books for the school year.  Book reports will be assigned each Friday for homework.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Math will consist of:

                    Getting Ready Addition and Subtraction
                    Addition and Subtraction to 18
                    Place Value Numbers to 100
                    Money
                    Time
                    Adding 2-Digit Numbers
                    Subtracting  2-Digit Numbers
                    Shapes and Fractions
                    Measurement
                    Place Value Numbers to 1,000
                    Adding and Subtracting 3-Digit Numbers
                    Exploring Multiplication and Division

A Math Test will be given every Friday.  Word problems will be given in addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
 
 

Language Arts and Phonics will consist of:

                    Listening and Speaking
                    The Sentence
                    Reading and Writing:  Class Story
                    Nouns
                    Reading and Writing:  A Story About Me
                    Verbs
                    Reading and Writing:  A Story
                    Adjectives
                    Reading and Writing:  A Descriptive Story
                    Capitalization and Punctuation
                    Reading and Writing Letters

A Language Arts Test will be given after each unit.
 
 

A Spelling Test will be given every Friday.  This test will come from words that are introduced in class each week.  The students will practice writing and spelling the words throughout the week.  Exercises are given daily for spelling.
 

Handwriting is a physical skill we must help students to develop.  Good handwriting habits and letter formation are stressed throughout the school year.  Cursive writing will also be introduced.
 
 
 

In Science we will discuss, do simple experiments, and students will be tested on:

                    Animal Groups
                    More Animal Groups
                    Weather
                    Water in the Air
                    Sound
                    Force
                    Moving
                    Oceans and Beaches
                    Living in the Ocean
                    Parts of Plants
                    Plants Are Living Things
                    Health

All second graders should prepare and submit a science project to the Science Fair.  Parents please encourage your child to participate.
 
 

In Social Science we will discuss and students will be tested on:

                    Our World
                    A City in the East
                    The Southern Mountains
                    Up and Down the Rivers
                    Across the Plains
                    Under the Shining Sun
                    Reaching the West
                    Around the World
                    A "Primary" Look Into Africa
 

During the month of February each child will be asked to do a one page report on a Black Historian.
 
 
 

Homework will be given every night.   It is expected to be returned the very next day.  Homework will be graded and returned by the end of the week.
 
 
 

Weekly papers will be sent home.  A comment and signature sheet will accompany these papers.  Parents, please sign and return this comment sheet.
 
 

If your child has any allergic reactions to any type of food or liquid, please send me a note.  This note will be attached to your child's classroom folder.
 
 

If your child is absent from school, he/she is still responsible for missed assignments.  Please make arrangements to pick up those assignments as soon as possible.
 
 
 

Good conduct is expected at all times.
