My Favorite Books

Go Ask Alice - By Anonymous
This book is really worth reading!  The book is in the form of a diary, and it is based on a real life story.  The entries are about a teenage girl who runs away from home, goes through drug abuse, sexual abuse, and self-depression.  In the end, it makes you value what you have.
I rate it 5 stars.

Love Ya Like A Sister = A Story of Friendship - From the Journals of Katie Ouriou / Edited by Julie Johnston
This book is also in the form of a diary, and it is based on a real life story.  Katie Ouriou is a sixteen-year-old who died suddenly and left her family and friends heartbroken.  Her family found her journal entries and discovered what a wise life she lived.  Katie teaches you that one of the greatest gifts of life is the gift of friendship.
I rate it 4 stars.

Hate You - By Graham Mcnamee
This was a very good book but was hard to get into at first.  It's about a girl who was choked by her father when she was younger, and now her voice is very raspy and scratchy. She also has a love for music, and, even though she can't sing for anything, it doesn't stop her.
I rate it 5 stars.

Someone Like You - By Sara Dessen
This was also a very good book.  It is about two best friends, and one of them gets pregnant.  The father would have been there for the girl except he died in a motorcycle accident.  The girl decides to keep the baby, and, throughout the whole thing, her best friend was by her side.
I rate it 5 stars.

Homecoming - By Cynthia Voigt
This is a book you've got to get a hold of.  It is a story about a thirteen-year-old girl and her two younger brothers and sister, who get abandoned by their mother. Their mother left them at a mall parking lot on a Saturday morning and never returned. The thirteen-year-old was left to take care of the kids and make all the decisions. Her task was to find their only living relative, their grandmother. She let nothing split them apart, not even the authorities.  This book is full of adventures and suspense!
I rate it 5 stars.

HOBBIES

A hobby that I enjoy doing during my free time when no one else is around is reading.  I read novels, short stories, chapter books, and magazines.  Reading books makes me feel relaxed after a hard day of working.  Even though my friends make fun of me because I often prefer reading over going out, I still do.  I feel that reading makes me a stronger person  and gives me so much knowledge in many areas.
Another hobby that I really, really love to do is play basketball.  Basketball is my life.  Whenever I am not able to read a book, I just go to the park and play basketball by myself.  I do this so that I can strengthen my basketball skills.  This is also a good way to get rid of stress, and, believe me, I have alot of stress.  Like my coach always says, "If you want to play hard, you've got to practice hard."

My Reflection on War

John Nash , Over the Top, oil on canvas,
79.4 x 107.3 cm, Imperial War Museum, London.

John Nash's Over the Top depicts war as it really was.  Over the Top illustrates soldiers of the First Artist Rifles who went over the top and rushed forward toward Marcoing near Cambrai.  In a matter of just a few minutes, sixty-eight of the eighty men were killed or wounded.  John Nash was one of the twelve who survived unharmed.  Over the Top expresses the anxiety that took over all the men when they left the trenches.  As they reached the top and rushed toward the enemy, one by one, most fell dead or wounded.  If the lieutenant commanded to move forward, the soldiers had to go.  Soldiers either killed or waited to get killed.  There was no way out of this horrible movement.  In "no man's land" there was barbed wire waiting to grab you, bullets waiting to pierce you, and bombs waiting to explode you away.  There must have been lots of bloodshed in the trenches and "no man's land." If a soldier survived, the horrible scenes would forever haunt him.  There was absolutely nothing good that came out of this war, only the loss of parents, friends, and loved ones.  The only thing that kept them alive was hope.  When the supervisor yelled "forward," they all moved faster and faster to their deaths.
