The Glory Field    By: Walter Dean Myers

Two thumbs up! This is a story of slavery, ancestral history, and the future of a family and its farm land. The Glory Field tells about the past and of the family's modern day trouble. Their symbolic reminder to never give up and forget where they come from are the cuffs and chains of Mahammad, the first member of the family who was brought from Africa to the US. Over all  this is an extremely great book!

The Girl Who Owned A City   By: O.T. Nelson

Three and a half stars! A plague has over swept the earth and all humans over the age of 15 will die. This interesting story of a teenager and her younger brother's struggle to keep going becomes an even harder struggle when a whole block of kids are under attack by a group of older vaccinated thieves (15-17 years old). The story goes on with thrilling twists as the block of kids grow into an army. It is a must read book!

Bridge to Teribethia  By: Katherine Paterson

Leslie and Todd have become best friends and over time they create this imaginary world that they are the rulers of. The only way into their world is to swing across a dried up creek on a rope hanging from a thick, sturdy branch. Something happens during the rainy season that ruins the future plans. It is a heart felt book.

Beyond Palmistry: The Art & Science of Modern Hand Analysis  By: Beverly Jaegers

This book tells about modern science and medicine using the prints of hands. It is an over all explanation on how the reading of palms, texture of skin, and description of certain lines can help prevent or detect diseases, disabilities, DNA faults, and future health problems as well as intelligence. An interesting book that is not just informational, but fun.

Of Mice and Men   By: John Steinbeck

This book is about two friends who go through a series of problems trying to work and stay alive. They live on a farm/plantation where they recently started to work. During their time on the farm, they encounter many problems with the wife of the owner and the killing of animals. Later on, the two friends are convicted of a murder and become fugitives. It is a spontaneous book with unbelievable events. You must read it!

My Hobby

My hobby is playing sports, mostly basketball, but I play all kinds of sports from golf to tackle football. I personally recommend basketball. The challenge is great, but fun. The body contact, the perspiration that shows you are working hard, the competition, and the sportsmanlike conduct all produce a great feeling after a game. I enjoy the sport like I love eating junk food. I take the sport seriously, but I always have fun and laugh when I play. Sports such as basketball bring discipline and order to each player. I recommend taking up a sport if you don't play one now. It's a great feeling and tons of fun.

World War I Reflection
Image Source: World War I Image Archive

World War I was a tragedy. The countless deaths of soldiers were outstanding and sad. I feel that a picture does speak a thousand words. That is why when you see a picture actually of death from a war, it helps bring a general idea of how these other soldiers must have felt and how they felt after they killed another human being. This picture that shows a burial of soldiers in coffins makes me realize how violent and traumatizing it is witnessing death, especially in a war. The deep hole that contained many coffins in the picture was less then the total accumulative deaths throughout the war, and even so the picture showed a different and truer side of war. It helped me realize that a war is to be taken seriously and that it is definitely not a thing to joke about.

When I thought of war, all I pictured were guns, a lot of noise, and many dead or injured bodies. I never realized the effects and how devastating war and fighting really is. While I studied World War I, I learned a lot about the soldiers situations, conditions, everyday routine, and how they might have felt. The medics were not well equipped, the supplies were short, and their utensils were not sterilized. They didn't even have painkillers or morphine when the soldiers were operated on or had something amputated. I just hope that many people realize war is not like a game of chess. Everyone that is involved is in danger of losing his life or taking another life. If everyone could just understand the true effects of the war and what happens during it,  they might think twice about generalizing war, the deaths, and the the outcome of victory.

(Just a little something to think about: Is a victory in war really a victory considering all the casualties and destruction that occurred?)
