“UNCLE MATT”
It was Christmas, and I was
only about six years old. I was in Texas with my family; we were
having a party. We were at my uncle Matt’s apartment. The house
was a light brownish color. I could smell sugar cookies in the air.
The Christmas tree was real, which I wasn't used to. My sister was
learning how to play the keyboard from one of my aunts. Everyone
was busy, and I was very bored so I wandered around and stood by people
all day.
I was walking when uncle
Matt suddenly lifted me up and then sat me on his lap. The sugar
cookies had a strong smell, but I can still remember smelling his after
shave. I'm not sure what kind he wore, but it smelled sweet.
My uncle Matt was always funny and joyful. He was in a joking mood
that day as always, and I remember that my aunt Diane was recording everything
on tape. He put me down and took Melissa, the baby my aunt was holding,
while she videotaped. He made Melissa dance and act out funny things.
Uncle Matt was very tall
and had brown smooth hair. His eyes were always warming. Also
when you looked at him, you felt as if he were your best friend whom you've
known for years. He also acted like your best friend as soon as you would
meet him. He had a funny voice and would always do different voices
and make everyone laugh. Uncle Matt was in his twenties when I knew
him, but he had the heart of a fifteen year old. He also had the
warmest smile of anyone in my family, and he was also very smart and witty.
The object that I remember
about him the most was his jacket. He was in the Army and always
wore it on casual days. His Army jacket was old, and I remember it
always smelled like dust with cologne or soap. His jacket was very
comfortable. Although it was very heavy, at least it seemed heavy when
I was so little.
Uncle Matt died in 1994
of pneumonia. I didn't go to his funeral because I was little and
it was all the way in Texas, where my mothers family lives. I saw
the pictures from the funeral, and he was so restful and pale. My grandparents
were crying and so unhappy when they received the folded flag from the
Army and the ceremonial gunshots went off. Our family had received
his jacket, my major remembrance of my uncle Matt. Unfortunately
my parents gave it away to charity. I was with my uncle many times, but
this is the only story I remember that has all of the specifics left.
