This course is a study which will bring insight into the role and contributions of ancient Africa in relation to the history of culture of our nation.

A. The Kingdom of Ghana

      1. Locate Ghana on a map
      2. State and explain the signifance of Ghana's location and beginning date
      3. State the name of the founder and capital of Ghana
      4. Explain the political structure, the importance of trade and the religion of the ghanian people

B. The Kingdom of Ghana

      1. Learn the period in which Ghana reached its peak
      2. State and explain the significance of the Almoravids
      3. State and explain the family structure of Ghana
      4. Describe the principal occupations of the people of Ghana
      5. Explain and give significant reasons for the fall of Ghana

C. The Kingdom of Mali

      1. Locate Mali on the map, its capital city and beginning date of Mali
      2. Explain the reasons Ghana became Mali's possession
      3. Explain the meaning of Mansa and the reasons Mansa Musa was the most powerful
          and famous ruler of Mali
      4. Describe the religion of the people of Mali and its importance
      5. Describe Mansa Musa's hadjj to Mecca

D. The Kingdom of Mali

      1. Explain who Mansa Suleyman was and his significance
      2. Explain Ali Kolen's role in Mali
      3. State year and explain the reasons for Mali's decline
      4. Explain the reasons Mali became a part of Songhay

E. The Kingdom of Songhay

       1. Locate Songhay and its capital on the map
       2. Explain how Songhay captured the kingdom of Mali
       3. Explain the importance of religion in Songhay
       4. State names of the two most important rulers of Songhay and give significance of their reign

F. The Kingdom of Songhay

      1. State the name of the original people of Songhay, explain the significance of the Moors
        2. Explain the improvements made by Askia Mohammed during his reign
        3. Explain the political system of Songhay
        4. Explain why and when the empire of Songhay declined

G. Methodologies:

Lectures and discussions, comparing, drawing influences from ideas, explaining conditions and events, also
recognizing causes and effects
