Using Multiple Intelligences
to Learn NatureScience
AIM:
Educators and parents will become aware that students have varying
learning styles that can be applied toward meeting science objectives.
RATIONALE:
The traditional understanding of intelligence assumes that our ability
to learn and do things is a result of cognitive ability. As a result,
IQ tests were derived and students were assessed and placed in classes
reflecting their scores. The problem with this is that IQ tests do
nothing to judge a student's potential. They merely demonstrate that
a child is good or not good at taking standardized tests. Moreover,
an extreme number of students are placed in special education classes because
they are judged on what they cannot do. This is why we feel it is
important to help educators understand the different learning styles and
adapt them appropriately to current teaching methods. With this information,
we are hopeful that educators will tap into and bring out individual potential
of our blossoming students.
AUDIENCE and PREREQUISITES:
The activities of this curriculum address educators and parents who
see the need for change in methodology. The learners must:
-
Be familiar with the multiple intelligence theory
-
Be sensitive to the needs of children
-
Be open to change
-
Have keen observational skills
-
Have basic computer knowledge
-
Be able to use a browser to locate pertinent information
SUBJECT MATTER:
The purpose of this site is to open the lines of communication between
educators, parents and students. The site will share the application
of Howard Gardner's eight intelligences in learning nature science.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon the completion of these activities, educators should be able to
:
-
Integrate eight intelligences for teaching plant science
-
Utilize resources on the Web for teaching with multiple intelligences
-
Recognize the intelligence best used for him/herself
-
Discern the intelligence dominating the learning of each student
INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN:
-
Introduce the Multiple Intelligences
-
Divide the class into groups, assigning each group a different intelligence
to discuss and refer them to the General Information section of the web.
-
The teacher will guide the learners to investigate the sites provided on
the Multi Intelligences Web.
-
The learners will identify their own strongest intelligence by taking a
quiz.
-
The learners will recognize his/her dominate intelligence through navigating
games and activities.
-
Each group will compose a report using the computer.
MATERIALS:
-
Macintosh or Windows machine with online capabilities
-
Netscape navigator software
ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:
-
Online quizzes
-
Each student will develop a lesson plan for a nature concept using multiple
intelligences.
