Teacher Directed Activities

Define:
Farming -- the act of growing crops or raising livestock for use in daily living
Pictures of farming and different foods.

Question:  How does farming relate to everyday living?
Allow enough time for different responses (guide students to appropriate answer)
Vocabulary List
Use large chart paper for KWL chart.
Use KWL chart to list information of prior knowledge on subject matter from students.

K -- what pupils know
W -- what pupils want to learn
L -- what pupils learned

Activities:
Flash pictures and show filmstrip of different farming situations to elicit
information and stimulate conversation.

Explain the need to chart information on Farming in the form of a Journal.
Teacher will guide students into setting criteria for Journals.

Students will create a menu including four basic food groups and select nutritious meal.
Activity -- Three cooperative groups of four
Oranges from Florida
pick - pack -- transfer to store
       Two days to pick
       One day to pack
       Transport by:
             Railroad -- three days
             Truck -- four days
             Plane -- one day

Group Activity -- mixed abilities
Select one method of transporting Oranges.  Explain/Defend your answer
Select and agree on only one mode of transportation per group.

Culminating Activities:

Trip to farm and/or grocery store.
Organize a room store with all four basic food groups.
Make price list for items in the store (math)
Higher Order of Thinking Skills (HOTS) -- organize a mock room store
Make Dollars and Cents room money signs for buying and selling; make change (math) with purchase.

Write a menu and select a meal for a family of four including the four basic food groups.

Accommodation:  Full support from teacher assistant and repeat directions as needed.

Modify activities for less able.
