INTRODUCTION
Looking out at the
beautiful blue sky, the sun's shining, no clouds in sight, what a beautiful
day, you say to yourself. However, is the earth as beautiful as it
may appear? Listening to the news media and environmental scientists,
our earth is gradually being destroyed. What possibly could lie beneath
that beautiful blue sky? If the earth is being destroyed, who
is responsible? The answer:
GLOBAL
WARMING, two simple words, but
no simple task to solve.
TASK
You
have been hired by a local research center to find the answers to the following
questions:
-
What
is global warming?
-
When
did global warming become a major concern?
-
What
are the factors which have contributed to this international problem?
-
What
can citizens and industries do to help?
You
will be divided into four teams. Each team will select one of the
questions to research (use of the web, interviews with environmental scientists
are highly recommended). Each team will create a web page site detailing
what you discovered in your research. In Addition, the following
questions will also need to be answered as whole class.
-
What
did citizens and industries not do during the 19th century that they are
doing today that's causing the global problem?
-
Are
there states or countries that have been affected more than others, if
so, what factors have contributed to this not being a problem in those
areas?
Remember,
this is a problem that is affecting all of us so, during your research,
if you discover recommendations for solutions, save them to share with
the entire class.
WEB
SITES
THE
PROCESS
Each team will
do the following:
-
Determine which team
member will be the team leader, writer and graphic expert. Their
skills will be needed as you begin to develop your web page.
-
Brainstorm for ideas,
this will aid in the team's focus during research.
-
Determine the contents
and design of your web page.
-
Using the sites listed
in the Resource section, begin to research your project.
-
Take notes as you
are browsing each site.
-
Be sure what you
write is in your own words. It is illegal to copy someone else's
work without giving proper credit. Browse the web for information
regarding plagiarism.
-
Using your notes,
begin to develop a first draft of your web page.
-
Once the first draft
is complete, make a copy for each team member to review and discuss.
-
After reviewing and
discussing the first draft, and when everyone is in agreement with its
content, revise the draft for final copy.
CONCLUSION
Through collaboration
with your team members and browsing the web sites, at the conclusion of
this project, you should have a better understanding of what global warming
is. You will also discover the factors which have contributed to
this international problem and most importantly, with this knowledge, you
will be able to make others aware of the problem and what can be done in
the future to prevent further destruction of our world.
