The Internet has a variety of free sounds for the taking in all
formats. Here are some great links to sound sites that
will get you started on your way to adding sounds to your
animations and Web pages.
A word to the wise
Read The Usage Clause
Most sound sites offer free downloads of various sounds and
other clips that are your's for the taking. If a site publishes
a
usage clause as a condition of downloading and using the file,
read it, understand it, and if they request a link back to their
site or a click on an ad banner, take a moment to honor the
request. Most sound sites experience incredible bandwidth
transfers with free downloads that costs big bucks. Advertising
keeps the sites free. Imagine having to pay a subscription fee
to get sounds of cat smeowing or a dogs barking.
Be Aware of Copyrights
Popular songs either in .wav, .midi, or MP3 format are
copyrighted and the record companies and artists are
waging war to stop the free use of their music without
permission. While there are many sites where you can
still download entire MP3 songs, or if you have a huge
library of MP3's, think twice before adding these songs
to a school Web page and advise your students of
copyright laws as well.
