Introduction: This module leads pre-primary
and primary grade students and teachers through activities and to resources
which will help them learn about basic geology and which will help them
internalize the basics of scientific inquiry.
Aim: This module introduces students to basic information
about geology; provides teachers and students with resources for further
study of geology; and introduces or reinforces an understanding of scientific
inquiry.
Rationale: In working through the activities
and information from this module, students will gain practical skills in
conducting science experiments and in how to access information on the
web; teachers will gain practical skills in using web-based modules as
teaching tools.
Goals and Objectives: Students will have a basic
understanding of some of the following concepts: minerals; rocks;
plate tec./continental drift; geological time periods; fossils/dinosaurs;
earthquakes; volcanoes. Students will be able to access relevant
information using links and resources provided. Students will understand
the following parts of a science experiment: problem; hypothesis; materials;
procedure; observations/data; conclusion. Teachers will understand
the fundamentals of teaching science, will be able to use a web-based module
as a teaching tool, and will have a number of resources available from
the module to use in teaching a geology unit.
Audience: The audience for this module is
made up of pre-pimary and primary grade students and teachers.
Pre-requisites: Students must have some understanding
of the basics of scientific inquiry.
Subject-Matter: Basic geological concepts.
