Rationale: These are highly motivational means of
getting students to assimilate the
information from the article and the computer. Children love
hands-on activities and using the computer . Therefore this strategy
of using what they like will increase their odds of being
successful in learning the lessons.
Goals and objectives: The students will write questions
and answers about sunspots on a
'cootie catcher'. Students will be involved in engaged learning.
Audience and pre-requisites: This lesson will
be completed in 5 days, in 40 minute
class periods for second grade.
Students who love to indulge in tactile activities and have had prior
exposure to
hands-on science activities, about sunspots, involving art and age-appropriate
videos will most likely be successful with the curriculum.
Description of subject-matter: This is a science
lesson about the sunspots found
on our star, the sun. Students will become aware of a pattern
of appearance of
and increase and decrease in the number of sunspots on the sun.
Instructional plan:
1. The students will make models of a cootie catcher.
2. The teacher will explain to the students
that they will be writing questions
about sunspots and then put them on
a cootie catcher to play a game.
3. The teaches will help the students
write 8 questions and answers about
sunspots on the board.
4. The teacher will read the directions
for the cootie catcher to the class
and demonstrate how to make the
toy.
5. The teacher will distribute plain
white paper and have the students prepare
a cootie catcher.
When they have one that works, she will instruct them to
write the 8 questions and
answers on each fold of the cootie catcher.
6. The teacher will give them time to play the sunspot cootie catcher game.
Materials: Chalkboard, chalk, white plain paper,
and enough copies of the
directions for each child in the classroom.
Plans for assessment and evaluation: The teacher
will assess and evaluate
this lesson through observation. The teacher will also have students
answer
questions pretaining to the lesson.
