Variables, Constants, and Control
For a science project, Jasmine wanted to determine
what effect the amount of water has on the health of
plants. She bought three ivy plants being careful to
pick three that were all the same size and variety. She
placed them all on a sunny window sill. During the next
month, Jasmine watered plant A every day and plant B
whenever the soil felt dry. Plant C was not watered at
all.
Jasmine was surprised by the condition of the plants
after a month. Plant A had lost some of its leaves, was
a pale yellow-green color, and looked sick. Plant B was
healthy, was dark green in color, and had grown. Plant C
looked dead. It had only a few leaves left, and they were
dried out. She concluded that both too much and too little
water are bad for plants.
