Activity One
The CIA World Factbook
Back to Activities page
The list of links provided for each country contains
one that connects you to the CIA World Factbook. This site profiles each country
and lists all manner of information. Because you will probably use this site
to gather data about the countries you choose to investigate it is a good
idea that you become familiar with it.
A country's profile is presented in list form
and uses many unfamiliar words to describe each category. There is no point
trying to memorize all the terms. An excellent glossary is provided so any
unfamiliar terms can be looked up. Since this is not a page written for twelve
and thirteen year olds some definitions may not be of much help. At that point
see the teacher.
Open The CIA
Factbook
-
Click on country listing and click on the
U for countries starting with that letter and open United States.
-
You will be taken to the United States
page where you will first see the map and the flag.
-
It is as stated a list of data pertaining
to the USA and not very exciting. Statistics though are very informative.
Spend a few minutes going over the page.
-
If you come across unfamiliar words return
to the top of the page and click on the World Factbook Home page. Once
there click on notes and definitions. There you will find an explanation
of the term you don't understand.
-
If there are abbreviations you don't understand
open the appendix section of the home page and click on abbreviations
to find out what it stands for.
