French Speaking Countries of the World
Activity Three
Physical Geography/Climate
In the United States we have become well insulated from the outside world. Because of advanced technology such as air conditioning, gas/electric heat, easy air travel, snow removal services, agribusiness etc... we do not interact with the outside world as much as people in other countries do. We don't spend a lot of time thinking of how geographical conditions and an area's climate can influence how the people live.
You are to select three countries from the list and examine, using the sites provided, what the geography and climate of each country is like. Before you begin see me for approval of your selections.
You may work alone or with a partner or a small group of no more than four students.
You will need to investigate the following:
Geography:

General location (continent, near what other countries)

Total land area
-
Coastline (name the body of water.)
-
Elevation (highest and lowest points)
-
Terrain/topography (Are there forest, deserts?)
-
Natural hazards
-
Rivers
Climate:
-
Average temperature
-
Rivers and lakes (are there any? If yes, name them and try to find out their length.)
-
Average rainfall
-
Winds
Once you have found this information you must also do it for Chicago. Compare the three countries' climate and geography to ours. Enter your conclusions about how things are different/alike in your journals.
You will also be responsible for a presentation about your research. You will be required to present your data to your classmates. The presentation cannot be longer than ten minutes . Presenters will also have to produce an artifact that supports their presentations. An artifact can be a visual aid like a poster, a drawing, an object created by the presenter. You will be evaluated by your classmates, other teachers, administrators, parents, and your teacher. We will evaluate each presenter using a scoring rubric. Click here to view the rubric.
