Activity Eight
I Can't Believe it
Have you ever had the opportunity to go somewhere else? If you have visited other cities or states in the USA you know that you have seen many thing similar to what you have seen at home. You have also seen some of the many differences. Illinois is mostly flat. When you travel to mountainous states it is truly a different experience. States that have desert regions present a totally different landscape than the one we are used to. If you go from Chicago to a small town or a farm setting you have witnessed differences in architecture and life styles.
If you have not had the good fortune to travel here or abroad you can still do this activity. All of you have wonderful imaginations so the task before you is not that difficult.

Select a country you have not yet researched.

Read and become familiar with that country.

Pretend that you are a person from that country. You can be male or female. You can be a family with two parents and two children. That is the maximum number in the group.

You are visiting the USA. You must select the destination in the USA.

Describe what you see that you don't see in your country.

You should not just focus on how things "look" different. What about the weather, the food, transportation, music, people and the way they act and behave. The list of differences is only limited to your imagination.

Enter the differences in your journals.

If you are a woman, perhaps a wife and mother, do you see things differently from your husband?

If you are child what do you see that perhaps your parents might miss.

If thinking like an adult is challenging, ask your parents to get involved in the activity.

When you have returned to your homeland you must report back to your friends or classmates what you have seen. We will play that role.

You should have a souvenir that represents something very different from what you have in your country. It can be an item, a poster, whatever.

Last but not least, you will be evaluated by the same rubric as used in previous activities.
