Welcome to Science Fair Central! We will be spending much of our time this first (and part of second) term preparing for science fair.
There are many ways to get ideas for your projects;
you can talk to people who are knowledgable about a topic, you can visit
the library to get
ideas, you can read books that you or someone you
know already has, and you can buy manuals (books) from bookstores which
have topics for
science fair, or you can get on a computer to find the information required for the assigned task.
This lesson will be used to help you prepare for the science fair. I realize that it is sometimes very hard to come up with ideas for a project.
Especially, since you have to come up with these" great ideas "year after year. This year, rather than you receiving a list of topics, I decided to
let your fingers (and brain) do the walking. This will be a different way for you to access ideas for your science fair project. You are invited
and expected to visit selected sites to search for new and exciting topics for your project. I know your search will be productive and I hope it
will be a fun task as you work to complete it
|
|
Your task (job) is to become a world wide web browser and search for topics(ideas) for your science fair project. You are expected to
go to any of the sites listed under resources and find at least three feasible (things you can actually do) project topics. You will then
share your ideas with me so we can decide if your three
choices are viable(acceptable) project ideas. Next, do some research
on each of
your three topics and narrow your choice down to the
very best one for you. Last, you are to write me a one page
brief of what you
chose as your topic and what you plan to do with it as
you continue on your journey to the science fair.

| Process |
|
1) You will go to the computer and log on to the internet.
2) You will go any of the listed web sites to search for science fair topics.
3) You will find three science fair topics which you think are viable subjects.
4) You should choose topics which are of interest to you and are topics which you will be able to find resources to complete the
project.
5) You will bring your three choices to the teacher for a conference (to decide if the choices are something that can be done with the
resources available).
6) You will choose one of the topics and write a one page description of your topic and why you are choosing (basically, you are
justifying your choice) this topic for your project.
7) Your teacher will return your one page description with notations for continuing your research.
8) You will go to the next step of the science fair procedures ,which are listed in your science fair notebook and on the wall in the
classroom.

Evaluation |
This step of your science fair project will be evaluated by you (self evaluation in your science notebook) and by your teacher. The evaluation will be dependent upon your finding a topic for your science fair project that you can actually do.
| Conclusion |
|
When this lesson is finished you will be aware of at least three sites on which to choose science fair project ideas. You will
also have choosen one topic out of the three that will be your science fair topic. Actually, you are just beginning to work on
your science fair project. Now that you know what your topic will be, you need to begin the research step of your project.
You can this by doing research on the web, you can go to your local libary, or your can use many of the science fair books
that your teacher has available in the classroom.
