WHAT SIZE LANDFILL?
You live in Anytown,
U.S.A., which is planning to open a new landfill on the west side of the
city in the next year. Anytown has a population of 65,00 , and almost
a ton of solid waste per person is collected annually from residential,
commerial, and institutional sources. One thousand five hundred pounds
of waste requires approximately one cubic yard of space in a landfill.
The depth of a one -
layer landfill should be fifty
feet.
The city would
like the facility to be adequate for at least ten years. It is believed
that in 15 years present solid waste quantities will double, due to Anytown's
projected growth and trends in waste generation.
