Pantomime by definition is the physical expression of a thought, idea or emotion without the use of words or props. The mimes creates a "illusion of reality" for the audience, this means through his specific use of his body he creates an imagined world that the audience can "see." He does this by giving imagined objects height, weight and volume. One of the main thing to remember is everything has an opposite and equal reaction. (ie...the wind is blowing, your body must show this by leaning into the wind as you walk the stronger the wind the more you lean.) Mime routines can be done to music to assist in the timing of the routine, it is not necessary to have music. Below is a chart of what you will find on this page.

History
Pantomime has been around for a thousand of years. It has been a way of communication been people of different languages in order to do business and trade.
The American Sign Liaguage Association has implemented a basic handbook of signs.
Emotions.
Emotions play a major part when you are performing a pantomime. Remember a mime has no props and does not speak, he must rely on the expressiveness of his body and emotions. Your facial expressions, at first, should be overly exaggerated. Try a variety of these emotions in the mirror. Then ask someone to observe you. Be prepared to accept constructive criticisms. Try more emotions than what is listed.
4. Surpassed - Frightened
5. Content - Anxious
6. Repentant - Unforgiving
White Face
White face and white gloves is
a method of that allows the mime to further create the "illusion" for the
audience. This allows the mimes face to become no face and yet every
face. This means the mime can silently become any character of his
choosing. The face is covered with a thin coating
of mineral oil, cold cream or petroleum jelly. Then you cover the
facial area with clown white makeup making sure to cover the eyebrow
area. Clown White covers the eyelids only on the area that is not
going to be covered by black eyeliner makeup.
Clicking
The mime uses his body to show
that he is lifting, watching or moving imaginary
objects. This is known as clicking. Clicking adds weight to your
objects. Clicking is a slight upward or downward motion of the head,
hand, legs, feet and arms. It shows the audience when you have pick
up an object.
Activities
1. The giant - Visualize a giant far from you. He now begins to walk toward you, with each step that he takes, your head should indicate his steps by head clicking. Please note, the closer the giant gets the more exaggerated the clicking of the head. Now have the giant leave, again indicate with head clicking the further he gets the less clicking2. Trampoline - Visualize someone on a trampoline. As they begin to bounce your head and eyes follow. Your head indicates the height they achieve by exaggerated head clicking. Have fun, make them do flips and flops. Always keep your eyes focused on exactly where you are visualizing the person to be or the mime will not be successful.
