Introduction
Aim
The objective of this lesson is to enable students to appreciate the life
and times of Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, the first permanent settler
of the city of Chicago by utilizing the World Wide Web and other
related sources.
Rationale
Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable became the first person
to permanently settle in the area now known as Chicago. Students
of African origin, as well as those of other ethnic groups need to be cognizant
of this fact. Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, an individual of African
descent, made a monumental contribution to the city of Chicago and helped
to initiate the world class city status Chicago exemplifies today.
This module will also address state goals and the Chicago Academic Standards
and Frameworks. The activities associated with
this module will incorporate social science and language arts goals.
The use of the World Wide Web will allow students to work at their own
pace and to explore related sites.
Goals and Objectives
1. To encourage student appreciation of the
contribution Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable made to the area known as Chicago.
2. To enable students to complete a research
encompassing the life and times of DuSable.
3. To permit students to utilize the WWW to secure
information pertaining to Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable.
4. To provide the teacher with lesson plans with
links to related sites,resources and background information
5. To meet national, state and city goals.
Audience
This module addresses both middle school
students and their parents. Also, this module may be utilized
by other educators for use in their classrooms.
Prerequisites
Students need to be able to access and
navigate the Internet.
Subject-Matter
Students will utilize the Internet and other
related sources to research information pertinent to the life and times
of Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable.
Instructional Plan
This module is intended as a 4 week unit.
The duration of this unit(time on task) is contingent on the student's
prior knowledge and depth with your and your
students pursue the tasks.
Materials
1. One computer with Internet access and a browser
2 One printer

4. Pens/pencils
5. Paper
6. Colored markers/pens

Assessment and Evaluation
l. Students will actively participate in developing a K-W-L
chart
2. Teachers will observe and assess students' participaton as
individuals and in collaborative groups
