You are an adolescent who is known
to procrastinate. You live in a an economically disadvantage area
in a large metropolis and would like to live elsewhere when you reach maturity.
You want to set goals for your life, but do not know where to start.
You have talked to your counselor, friends, and relatives but you still
are confused. You want to be financially stable and retire in comfort.
Finally, one day when you are talking to your Service Learning Coach about
your situation, he gives you an idea that might help your situation.
He suggests that you stop procrastinating and take charge of your future.
He suggests you go to the computer lab and do some individual research
on your potential career options. He tells you not to get to up tight
because the career you have today may not be the same one you have 5 to
10 years from now. So go on Mr. Procrastination, go out into the
Internet and see what...
Your task is to create a fictitious
character who will reach out to the World Wide Web and seek out a career
that will allow you the ability to "catch your dream" and run with it.
As you search the web you will be required to Email your teacher once you
have acquired pertinent information to your task. You will also be
required to produce several documents that will need to turned in to your
teacher.
Step #1: Select a name for your fictitious character. Find out about yourself by visiting one of the sites listed in the "Resources" section to research your career interests. By learning about your personality you will be able to target specific careers you may be interested in for your fictitious character.
Step #2:
Email your findings to your teacher.
Step #3: Search the internet sites below and select
at least 3 to 5 careers that may interest you. You will find sites
listed in the "Resources" section.
Step #4:
Email your selections to your teacher.
Step #5: Choose one of your career choices and begin to research it in detail. Remember to take notes as you surf the net. Note cards are a suggested means of note taking.
Step #6:
Email your career selection to your teacher.
Step #7: Write a short research paper that explains why you chose the career you did. The paper should be no longer than two pages when typed on a word processor. The paper should be double spaced and have a font size of 14. Once you complete your paper turn it into your instructor.
Step #7: Search the sites listed in the "Resources " section to find a site that will help you in composing a resume about your career choice.
Step #8: Draft a resume for your character and turn it into your teacher.

This WebQuest was constructed to give you a feeling of how you can use the World Wide Web to investigate a career. Although the career you chose in this WebQuest may not be your future career, it should give you a feeling for the vast amount of information about careers one can access with just a point and click of the mouse.
Current statistics suggest that most people will make at least several career changes before they reach retirement. This is why it is important for you to be aware of your interests, skills, and hidden talents. Once you become more aware of your interests and the like you will be able to make choices for yourself with a sense of confidence.
I hope that by doing this WebQuest that you have become
aware of the complexity of the journey that you face as you choose a career
path. I also hope you have become a little more familiar with surfing
the Internet for information on careers and the enormous amount of information
that the World Wide Web offers to an individual with a point and click
of a mouse.
