The Great Migration was supported by a staple within the Black community . .
. The Black Church.
Correspondence between Black southerners and the Bethlehem
Baptist Association in Chicago, Illinois revealed anxiety for a new life and a "Hearty
Welcome" to the North. "The arrival of hundreds
of thousands of migrants, however, simply could not be ignored; churches,
being African Americans' richest and most influential institutions, were quickly
called to action in the effort to help migrants properly adjust themselves to
life in Chicago."
