Reading Enhancement Action Plan*

*Taken from the CPS Teachers Academy for Professional Development

Program Description

The Chicago Public Schools Reading Enhancement Action Plan (R.E.A.P.) calls for continuous reading progress in every school. The focus is on schools with declining and/or low scores. However, there is also the intent that schools with flat scores will demonstrate growth and schools with increasing scores will continue to improve. Schools are accountable for the reading progress of all students, including those with limited English proficiency and those with disabilities.

Reading Enhancement Plan Strategies

A governing  strategy and five support strategies provide the framework for the Reading Enhancement Action Plan. The strategies are as follows:

Governing Strategy

Clearly articulate the elements of a sound reading program aligned with the Illinois Right to Read Initiative and the Chicago Academic Standards.

Support Strategies

  1. Prepare educators to improve their schools' reading programs through professional development.
  2. Make reading a primary focus of the School Improvement Plan for Advancing Academic Achievement (SIPAAA) which concentrates efforts on priority goals and holds principals accountable for results through their overall evaluations.
  3. Provide a variety of assessment tools.
  4. Make support information available.
  5. Focus resources on reading improvement.
