Lorraine Hansberry - 4055 W. Arthington
         Hansberry (1930-1965) is author of the prize winning play, "A Raisin in the Sun". Her
         auto-biography is entitled To Be Young Gifted and Black and she died of cancer at
         the age of  35.  She was a graduate of Englewood High School.

Langston Hughes - 226 W. 104th St.
          Hughes (1902-1967) is one of America's most honored poets. He was nurtured by the
          Harlem Renaissance period and is remembered for the creation of the character,
          "Simple".

Mahalia Jackson - 917 W. 88th St.
         Jackson (1911-1972) was a contralto gospel singer, known the world over. She made
         her first record in 1934 and was a resident of Chicago.

James Weldon Johnson - 1420 S. Albany Ave.
          Johnson (1871-1938) wrote the poem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing", which was set to
          music by his brother, Rosamond. This song is hailed as the national anthem of the
          African American community.

Scott Joplin - 7931 S. Honroe St.
         Joplin (1868-1917) is the father of "ragtime" music. His opera, Tremonish was
         adapted for the movie, The Sting.

Percy Julian - 10330 S. Elizabeth
          Julian (1868-1975) was an internationally recognized chemist who contributed to the
          treatment of arthritis. His pharmaceutical company undertook pioneering work on
          steriods  and hormones. He was a multimillionaire and lived in Oak Park, Illinois.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - 4445 S. Drexel Blvd.
            King (1929-1968) was past president of the Southern Christian Leadership
            Conference  and preeminent leader of the civil rights movement. He was
             awarded the   Nobel Peace  Prize in 1964.

Dr. Theodore K. Lawless - 7010 S. Princeton Ave.
          Lawless (1892-1971) was a leading dermatologist (skin specialist) with a world
           reputation.  He received his medical degree from Northwestern University.
