was a lawyer who became a U.S. Congressman in 1889, a position
he held for two
years.
Irvin C. Mollison - 4415 S. King Drive
Mollison,
born in Chicago, became the first Black to be appointed as judge of the
Customs Court
in 1945.
Anthony
Overton- 221 E. 49th St., 4935 S. Indiana Ave.
Overton (1864-1946)
was an ex-slave, who graduated from law school, became a
banker,
judge, newspaper publisher and entrepreneur. His businesses were very
important
to the development of the African American community of Chicago.

Powell - 7530 S. Shore Dr.
Powell
(1908-1960) was elected to the New York City Council in 1940, and the U.S.
Congress
in 1945, where he served until his death in 1960. He also succeeded his
father
as minister of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem.
