Introduction
In order for students to become better readers and writers,it
is necessary to understand and use figurative language. I will use
the computer to reteach and show examples of figurative language.
Figurative language creates vivid, clear pictures for readers.
To activily engage students in reading authors' use similes,metaphors,personification
, idioms, propaganda and alliteration. Students need to be able to
comprehend and identify these parts of speech when reading any type of
book.

Aim
To activily engage fifth and sixth graders in comprehending, identifying
and using figurative language to improve reading and writing skills. They
will engage in interactive activities using the computer.
Rationale
Since reading and writing are requirements for all students, lets
give them skills and practice in
identifying , comprehending , and using figurative language.
Understanding figurative language will help students form vivid mental
pictures and enjoy what they read and write.
Goals and Objectives
In this lesson , students will gain the ability to differentiate
or idenify figuratiive language
in a story, poem,or fairy tale. They will gain knowledge
that they can apply to future reading
and writing experiences. They will locate , evaluate,and
collect information from a variety of sources

demonstrate the understanding of explict and implict meaning in literature
re-
presenting individual , community, national,
world and historical perspectives.

Students will describe the mood/atmosphere of narrative literature and
identify ways in which an author establishes it (propaganda,,persuasion).
Describe the function of key literary
devices in representative work of dramatics
literature, prose,fiction , and poetry(e. g. metaphor,
simile, imagery,).

Students will write to communicate for a variety of purposes.

Revise selected drafts b y adding elaborating,
deleting, combining, and rearranging written text

the language arts for inquiry and research to acquire , organize, analyze,
evaluate, and
communicate information.

Audience
Fifth and Sixth Graders
Prerequisites
These 5th and 6th graders must have a good phonic background, infer
meanings from prefixes
, suffixes. and context ,
They must have basic knowledge of computer operations and some
technology concepts. They must have basic keyboard and mouse knowledge.
They must be able to work in collaborative groups in order to be successful
in acquiring needed skills and stated goals. The students must have
prior knowledge of similes, metaphors, personification,Idioms,and
alliteration.

Instructional Plan
The teacher will guide a small group of students (or
the whole class) through identification of figurative language, using vocabulary
and shairng examples of each type of figurative language. Students
may then go through the student section of this lesson and test their knowledge
of what they learned about metaphors.
Textbooks or Trade books, chalkboard, paper, computer, web pages,
web worksheet, mouse, pencils, and paper.
Assessment and Evaluation
Students will click on and identify at least four of the five metaphors
for 80% mastery. Students will use a textbook or a tradebook to make a
list of metaphors, to type into the computer list of
figurative language. On the computer the students will write
a poem or paragraph using metaphors.
