CFS1  Identify important ideas or principles that make good rules and/or laws.

Materials:  construction paper, markers.

Activity:  Have groups brainstorm laws during the 1800's.  Make lists of the laws.

Viewpoint:  Have groups form two sides (North/South).  Have each side determine why the laws were good or bad.  Have students conduct a debate.  Next, have students "vote" to change the laws.  Post new laws.  (Optional:  have students discuss classroom rules)

Discuss why these rules are important.  In groups, brainstorm ways to treat everyone respectfully and fairly.  Post the "Golden Rules of conduct toward others."
